These position is located at the Louis A. Johnson VA Healthcare System in Clarksburg, WV.

TOUR OF DUTY: Primarily 12 hour shifts however, subject to change depending on the needs of the medical center.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

Must pass pre-employment examination.

DUTIES:

  • Provides direct patient care to patients in the ICU, CLC, Inpatient Psychiatry, Medical Surgical, Emergency Department, and PACU.
  • Evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal care.
  • Provides comprehensive emergency care to unstable/critically ill patients.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes adult and geriatric patients.
  • Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
  • Functions independently or with minimal supervision to provide direct and indirect care to patients
  • Maintains current clinical practice through ongoing continuing professional growth; practices according to the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring identifies dysrhythmia and treats appropriately.
  • Administers medications using the principles and practices of bar code medication administration
  • Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
  • Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the information of the plan of care.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of patient and his/her clinical condition.
  • Prepares, hangs, monitors, and discontinues IV fluids.
  • Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusts assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Orients new employees to the Float Pool.
  • Triage process utilizing ESI.
  • Review chart and utilize protocol/SOP orders to complete pre-visit work up, including completion of clinical reminders
  • Provide telephone triage/telephone follow-up (assess patientÂ's health concerns, determine level of healthcare intervention needed and communicate and document clearly and accurately).
  • Triage walk-ins and satisfy any needs that can be met by RN either face to face or by telephone.
  • Call high risk patients the day after the patient was seen in the Emergency Department.
  • Utilize the Nursing process (assessment, evaluation of lab results/diagnostic testing and clinical symptoms) and communicate with providers to plan a course of treatment for the patient.
  • Administer immunizations and other injections (intradermal skin testing, allergy injections, B12 injections, etc.).
  • Triage for urgency of care in the clinics and by telephone.
  • Perform ear irrigations, bladder scans, EKGs, Foley catheter insertions, wound dressings, assist with procedures, etc. as required by clinic need.
  • Perform phlebotomy for the purpose of blood specimen collection.
  • Complete post discharge telephone calls as per facility policy.
  • Become PICC line competent.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Note: Critical care experience is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English .

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research. Education/Experience Requirements:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or the ability to complete such within one month of selection.
  • Basic Arrhythmia class completion or the ability to complete such within one month of selection.
  • Cardiovascular pharmacology class completion or the ability to complete such within one month of selection.
