The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time clinical-track faculty member to work in the Hospital Services Section. Primary clinical responsibilities will be after hours (evenings and weekends) coverage of the Psychia! try Emergency Services. As the only faculty member psychiatris! t who is 'in-house' at these hours, responsibilities will also include supervision of the psychiatry resident covering the consult-liaison and adult and child inpatient psychiatry services at these times.
To compensate for the after hours nature of these positions, a salary commiserate with fulltime work will be provided for an average work load of three 10 hour shifts each week, averaged over each month. In addition, compensation at $150 per hour will be provided for any additional time spent covering the service over the month.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Psychiatric Emergency
The Psychiatry Emergency Service sees approximately 5000 visits a year. Crisis evaluation, treatment initiation, stabilization, and referral are available 24 hours a day/seven days a week every day of the year. Patients of all ages and with all diagnoses are seen.
Consultation-Liaison
The Consultation-Liaison program receives approximately ! 120 requests per month for initial consultations; while these patients remain in the medical-surgical hospital, follow-up care is provided to most of them. For hospitalized patients, these consultation services provide 24 hour access to psychiatric consultations. In addition, psychiatric liaisons with specific inpatient medical specialty units provide ongoing access to mental health specialists.
Inpatient Units
Adult: The current 25-bed unit at University Hospital treats the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders including a growing number of psychiatry patients with medical needs. Occupancy averages 90% or better; length of stay averages approximately 8 days. At present, the vast bulk of the admissions come from the Psychiatric Emergency Services that is located adjacent to the Emergency Department. The Consultation-Liaison and Psychosomatic Medicine Program is another admissions source. About 20% of patients are medically ill, with a severity simi! lar to those patients found in an acute aftercare facility.
Child: A 14-bed Child/Adolescent unit treats the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders as well.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the psychiatric emergency program.
Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position. Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients throughout the hospital, the candidate must have a familiarity and comfort with medical issues as necessary to provide appropriate psychiatric emergency care.
Scholarly Activity
Academic interests are encouraged. Accomplishments such as book chapters, development of educational programs, and inquiry about the clinical aspects of the provision of care are examples. Programmatic research is not expected and specific protected time to do research is not allocated.

Qualifications and Requirements
A doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy is required.
Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary.
Board-certified/eligible in Psychiatry
Board-certification/eligibility in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry desired but not required
Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration.
Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary.
Active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical staff.
Under Michigan Law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of employment or transfer for this position.
Completion of a residency in Internal Medicine and recognition by the American Board of Internal Medicine or similar recognition i! s desirable but is not required
